My dream of a Coton De Tulear joining our family remained just that for over twelve years. As an Army Family of four with constant relocations within the U.S. and abroad, my focus as an Army Officer’s wife and mother was supporting my husband, Wylie’s, career while raising a family on the go. With an average of one move per year, it was important that we remain light in personal quota of pets. Our daughters’ two Dalmatians filled our limit of two pets, so my Coton had to wait.
Years passed and Army Retirement came after 24 years of proud service on Wylie’s part. Relocations ceased after a final move to Phoenix in our home state of Arizona. Our daughters were now grown and moving on. Finally, the time was right. Now empty nesting with available time, enthusiasm, and energy presented a new opportunity: taking up the craft of rare breed canine exhibition. Our first Coton came home with us from California in 1999. We were about to burst with joy when bringing tiny GOLD COAST STAR “JASMINE" home with us! Jasmine’s story began over a decade ago now, but we will always have a very special place in our hearts for our first little Coton Girl who was extremely patient with us as we learned the this new hobby right along with her. Jasmine is now retired and “living the good life,” as The Princess she truly is with our friend Nadine. She was just the beginning of an always interesting and fulfilling voyage on our way to becoming Cachet Cotons.
Our Reality is sweet! Our Fluffy Children live with us as our constant companions. We have the absolute pleasure of sharing our hearts and home with our lovely Cotons. We are not and never will be a commercial breeder, and our dogs DO NOT spend time in dog runs or outdoor kennel facilities. We welcome one to two litters per year, concentrating on QUALITY rather than quantity. We carefully plan each litter with the added advantage of computerized pedigree analysis and health tracking. We assist our Coton mothers throughout their whelping and rearing processes, leaving nothing to chance. We give personal attention to each of our Cotons throughout the day, each day.
Our Commitment to our Cotons and the Breed is paramount. In order to produce top-quality Cotons of optimal health, sound temperament, and body structure true to their breed standard; one must first begin with the same high standards in parentage. We breed only the finest quality Cotons from long lines of National and International Champions. Above all, we place emphasis on health and temperament. Before being bred, our Sires and Dams undergo extensive health testing to include: Heart and Patella Certification in accordance with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) rigorous standards; a Comprehensive Blood Panel including Thyroid; and Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) Certification.
Birth or “Whelp" of Cachet Puppy litters occurs in our Master Bedroom, and Mom and Puppies will remain in this serene, cocoon-like setting with their mother and us for the first three weeks of their lives. From day one, each puppy learns to feel safe with our tender touch, soft voice, and love.
At Three Weeks Old, it is moving time for Mom and Babies! They are moving to our den and out of the protective “bubble” they have resided in thus far. In this new location, the puppies will advance their learning curve to experience more and learn to tolerate their long, gradual, and critical exploration of new sights, sounds, scents, and surfaces. At this time, we begin to handle the puppies for more than their daily weigh-ins, bed changes, etc.
At Five Weeks Old, it is moving time again! This time Mom and Babies are moving to the kitchen where they will reside until Adoption Day. The kitchen is the hub of all Bearup home and Cachet activities. This is a busy and exciting time indeed for the puppies as they have now mastered walking, running, barking, and playing with their siblings and mother. The kitchen serves as our Puppy “Bomb Proofing” Room. As the most active room in the house there are clanging pots and pans, the dishwasher running, the vacuum cleaner passing nearby the puppy pen, the telephone ringing and more. Also new in this location is a constant stream of people and dogs for the Puppies to socialize. The proper and progressive introduction to the above is critical to building happy, healthy, and confident/well-adjusted Cotons.
At Five to Six Weeks Old, it is also time to begin with housetraining! From the kitchen it is convenient to scoot the Little Ones out the patio door and on to our well-manicured lawn in the back yard for their potty breaks and exercise/play time. Because of this, Cachet Puppies have an excellent start on housetraining by Adoption Day.
At Eight Weeks Old, the Babies are taking their first car rides. Their first ride is usually a trip to the veterinarian’s office for a full medical exam and first puppy vaccinations.
At Nine Weeks Old, their next car ride is to Phoenix City Hall to visit Daddy Wylie and many Coton Puppy Fans, for “Advanced Travel and Socialization.” After all, who wouldn’t rather play with adorable and sweet Coton Puppies over working?!
While waiting for Puppies, our reserved families also receive a detailed Coton Shopping List, and other important information along with plenty of assistance in becoming fully prepared for Puppy’s Homecoming.
Adoption Day arrives when the puppies reach nine to ten weeks. Cachet Puppies are Adopted in person. To help ensure the safety of our Little Ones and facilitate a proper and smooth transfer into their new homes, we place our Puppies from our loving arms into yours. Exception to Adoption Day in our home for compelling reasons is possible, in which case a Personal Courier delivery is optional at additional charge. Also, we are able to meet Families at the Phoenix Airport to facilitate your ability to return home the same day. However, if you have not visited our home prior to this point, this would be an excellent time for you to do so. Your Puppy’s environment and conditions during these first formative weeks of life is key to his or her normal development and sense of well-being. For this reason, we strongly encourage you to do a home visit at some point either before Puppies are born or on Adoption Day. Our Puppies undergo full Veterinary exams and receive puppy vaccinations appropriate for Puppy’s age. We provide for you written documentation of Puppy’s Vet visit, Vaccination Record, Health Warrantee, and both American Association of the Coton De Tulear (AACDT) & The United States of America Coton De Tulear Club (USACTC) Registrations. The Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) Registration is also available upon request. On Adoption Day, we send Puppy home with a gift bag filled with a Coton Puppy Book, a selection of the best grooming products, toys, and chews available. Inside Puppy's Book you will find: Feeding Directions, Vaccination Protocol, Vaccination Record, Adoption Contract, Newborn & Puppy Photographs, and more.
Please Contact Us for details on our Puppy Reservation Process. Keep in mind that we many times have our complete litters reserved before they are born, so plan ahead. Advance Puppy Reservations allows our Families-In-Waiting a personal and unique voyage through the entire litter’s growth process from Day One through Eight Weeks. Our Reserved Families happily anticipate the exciting day they receive Emails Announcing the Little Ones' arrival! First photos occur at Three Days Old, and weekly photos are taken thereafter from One Week through Eight Weeks Old. These are all emailed to you each week along with an age-appropriate litter development report and notification of ADORABLE Puppy “FIRSTS,” like first pup to open eyes, first tooth, first steps, first bark, etc. While waiting for Puppies, our reserved families also receive a detailed Coton Shopping List, and other important information along with plenty of assistance in becoming fully prepared for Puppy’s Homecoming.
We enjoy maintaining contact with our Coton Families for many years to come after Adoption Day, sharing stories, photos, health information, and so much more. Christmas cards and PHOTOS are strongly encouraged! We also enjoy hosting periodic Coton Play Groups at our home and occasional Coton Reunions.
