The Coton De Tulear is best known for its cotton-textured coat and its WONDERFUL temperament. This small dog stands at about 10 inches tall and weighs an average 10-13 pounds. A Coton can easily enjoy a life span to 15 years or more.
There is no coat more beautiful to the eye and luxurious to the touch! A Coton’s white to mostly white coat with fawn or grey markings, grows to an ultimate length of 4 to 6 inches and can be very dense. A full-grown coat requires grooming every other day, although thinning the full-length coat or utilizing a puppy-cut, can
substantially reduce grooming time. Setting a regular grooming time in the evening can be very enjoyable for both Coton and its owner. This becomes a very special time to be spent one on one for quality bonding time. An active family on the go may prefer to keep their Coton in a puppy-cut (shorter length) because of the added convenience and ease of bathing and grooming. On average, Cotons require a monthly bath. Their coats are
oil-free and do not give off a “doggie” odor, even when wet. With a non-shedding and non-dander coat, the Coton is an excellent choice for allergy sufferers.

The Coton De Tulear is a small dog with a BIG heart. He bonds strongly to his masters. Cotons are very intelligent, eager to please, and easy to train. They are also excellent watch dogs. As such, this dog will bark when someone comes near your home or rings the doorbell, and will cease barking either when your company has joined you indoors or the person sighted outdoors has moved on.
This non-aggressive dog enjoys the company of humans of all ages as well as other animals. Always happy and pleasantly entertaining, this CLOWN loves nothing more than to be the center of attention. Cotons are excellent with children, however, as with any breed, children must be taught the proper way to socialize with and handle a dog or puppy.
As very calm and even-tempered canines, these fur companions have also been very successful as therapy dogs. In fact, the Coton is often referred to as the “anti-stress dog.”

Very attractive to many, is the fact that the Coton is versatile in activity level as well. These companions are eager participants on a 3-mile walk or hike, but would also enjoy a nice afternoon nap or curling up on the sofa during a good movie. Also, don’t be fooled by the lovely coat--these dogs are not just beautiful house companions! They are very agile, and are excellent competitors in the sport of agility as well!

Some Cotons love water enough to take to the water unprompted for a swim. Because of this characteristic, care must be taken to keep these fur children safe from swimming pools and ponds.

Most of all, Cotons love nothing more than to be with their masters, and as such, they want to GO along, whether it is for a walk, a ride in the golf cart or a cross-country airline trip.
The Coton’s small body makes airline travel quite easy and enjoyable. With an advance reservation for your pet and the use of a Sherpa Bag, you may carry your Coton into the Cabin of most airlines. The Large size Sherpa Bag fits quite nicely under the seat in front of you during your flight. This makes it possible for your fluffy, loved one to always remain with you while traveling by air, avoiding stressful and isolated cargo travel.

Cotons are truly versatile canines in a wide range of situations, so what could be more perfect? The Coton comes pretty close for many, but it is very important to discover which breed of dog best fits into your family, home, and lifestyle.
Cotons are truly versatile canines in a wide range of situations, so what could be more perfect? The Coton comes pretty close for many but it is not an appropriate choice for everyone. Although the Coton De Tulear is very versatile and is an excellent companion, this breed bonds closely with its masters and does not do well if left alone all day every day. The Coton thrives best in a home where there is someone present at least part of each day. Also, a commitment to regular grooming is required in order to maintain their beautiful cotton-like coat they are known for. If you would like some assistance, we are happy to discuss with you, your expectations and desires in a companion dog in order to help determine if a Coton de Tulear is a good fit for your family and home.
